Giles Watling MP has today launched an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling on the Government to increase defence spending to 3% of GDP.
The Early Day Motion aims to appeal to broad, bi-partisan support for our Armed Forces. It is not intended only for front line equipment it is also to improve facilities and pay with a view to boost retention and recruitment.
Speaking of the EDM, Mr Watling, the Member of Parliament for Clacton said:
'The Government has already done much to modernise and improve our Armed Forces in the last decade. However I feel we can do much, much more. We know not from where the next threat will come – or when, but we must be prepared. Giving our Service men and women salaries that reflect the important work that they do, rebuilding infrastructure, servicing and replacing equipment - these are simple things the Government can do to maintain Britain as a great power. In order to do so however we need to urgently increase defence spending and I hope that colleagues across the House will support my EDM calling for as much.
Weakness is provocative. The stronger we are, the less likely malign forces are to threaten British values and interests in the world.
Defence is an area where spending money now may be the decision that ultimately saves money, lives, and the Sovereignty of our great island. I think we would be foolish not to consider it a top priority in the uncertain world in which we live.'"
